Zimbabwe Confirms Open Team for the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad

Zimbabwe has officially unveiled its Open team for the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, set to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 15–27 September 2026. Widely regarded as the most prestigious international team event in chess, the Olympiad will bring together more than 400 teams from across the globe, making it the largest gathering of national chess teams in the world. 

The Zimbabwe Open team will be captained by Kudakwashe Sibanda and features a talented blend of experience and determination:

Tapiwa Jele (2132)

Emarald Takudzwa Mushore (2100)

Vitalis Mapuranga (2064)

Terrence Mureya (2054)

These players will proudly wear the Zimbabwean colours as they face some of the strongest chess nations in the world in what promises to be an unforgettable tournament.

The World's Greatest Team Chess Event

The FIDE Chess Olympiad is held every two years and is considered the pinnacle of international team chess. Unlike individual championships, players compete for their countries, creating an atmosphere of national pride, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

The 2026 edition will feature both the Open and Women's competitions, each played over 11 Swiss-system rounds with teams consisting of four boards and one reserve player. The previous Olympiad in Budapest broke participation records with 193 Open teams and 181 Women's teams, and Samarkand is expected to attract an even larger field. 

Why Samarkand?

The historic city of Samarkand, one of the world's oldest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has become one of FIDE's premier hosts in recent years. Situated along the ancient Silk Road, Samarkand has deep historical links to the spread of chess and successfully hosted several major international chess events before earning the honour of staging the 46th Chess Olympiad.
