JR Mawere International Chess Tournament 2026: Honouring a Legacy Through Chess
Zimbabwe's chess calendar continues to gather momentum as attention turns to one of the country's most respected annual events—the JR Mawere International FIDE Rated Chess Tournament 2026. More than just a competition, the tournament celebrates the life and legacy of the late Johnstone Rex (JR) Mawere, whose contributions to the city of Kwekwe and commitment to community development continue to inspire many. Over the years, the tournament has evolved into a fitting tribute, bringing together chess players from Zimbabwe and beyond in the spirit of excellence, friendship, and sportsmanship.
A Tournament with Purpose
Unlike many ordinary chess competitions, the JR Mawere International is built around preserving a legacy. The event honours a leader remembered for his dedication to education, youth empowerment, and public service. Today, those values are reflected through a tournament that encourages fair play, discipline, and the development of chess across Zimbabwe.
Growing Stronger Every Year
Since its inception, the JR Mawere International has grown into one of Zimbabwe's premier FIDE-rated tournaments. Every edition has attracted stronger fields and greater regional participation, with players travelling from neighbouring countries to compete. The tournament has become an important opportunity for local players to earn FIDE rating points while testing themselves against quality opposition without leaving the country.
Looking Back at Previous Editions
Recent editions have produced exciting contests and memorable champions while helping to raise the standard of competitive chess in Zimbabwe. The 2025 edition attracted a strong field of more than 70 players in the Open Section, reflecting the tournament's continued growth and popularity. Earlier this year, the organisers also successfully hosted the JR Mawere U1900 FIDE Rated Tournament, giving developing players another valuable platform to compete and improve.
