Zimbabwe's premier open chess tournament is back. The 6th Edition of the Minerva Zimbabwe Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament will take place in Harare, bringing together local, regional, and international players for one of Southern Africa's strongest chess competitions. Organized by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation and proudly sponsored by Minerva Risk Advisors, the tournament continues to grow in prestige and participation.
Beyond the competition itself, the Minerva Zimbabwe Open has become an important benchmark for the country's chess development. Each edition offers local players the rare opportunity to face strong regional and international opposition without leaving Zimbabwe, while providing juniors with invaluable experience against seasoned competitors. For arbiters, coaches, and spectators, the tournament is equally significant, serving as a platform for learning, networking, and celebrating the continued progress of Zimbabwean chess. As the event continues to grow in stature, it reinforces Zimbabwe's position as one of Africa's emerging hubs for competitive chess.
Tournament Format
This year's tournament will feature multiple sections including Open A, Open B, Ladies, Development, and the Corporate Rapid Championship. The Open, Ladies and Development events will run over a 9-round FIDE-rated Swiss format, with attractive prize funds and opportunities for players of all levels to compete for national honours and international rating points.

What Makes the Minerva Zimbabwe Open Special?
Unlike many tournaments that cater only to elite players, the Minerva Zimbabwe Open welcomes the entire chess community. Juniors, club players, corporate competitors, women, veterans, and titled professionals all compete under one roof, creating a unique festival atmosphere rarely seen elsewhere in the country.
Beyond the competition, the tournament provides valuable FIDE rating opportunities, encourages interaction between generations of players, and serves as an important stepping stone for Zimbabweans aiming to compete on the continental and international stage. Every game played contributes to the continued growth of chess in Zimbabwe.
With another strong field expected, the big question remains: Who will be crowned the 2026 Minerva Zimbabwe Open Champion? Will a former winner reclaim the title, or will a new name emerge to join the tournament's growing list of champions?
