Zimbabwe Chess in 2026: My Take as a Young Player

 Zimbabwe Chess in 2026

As a young chess player in Zimbabwe, looking at the 2026 ZCF calendar honestly gets me excited. This year is packed. Pane chess almost every month, and that alone shows kuti Zimbabwean chess is alive and growing.
From January kusvika December, there’s always something happening meetings, tournaments, youth events, opens, even international competitions. For someone like me who loves the game, this calendar is motivation. Hakusi kungoti chess is there, but kuti pane some opportunities.

Youth Chess Is Finally Serious

What stood out to me first is how much focus is on juniors and schools. Cadet and Youth Championships, U1900 and U1800 events, schools leagues from district level kusvika national finals  this is big.
Growing up, a lot of young players struggle to find competitions. But in 2026, hapana excuse. If you’re serious, there’s a platform for you. From primary school kusvika high school, pane nzira yekukura mu chess.

Big Tournaments Right Here at Home

Another thing I really like is that Zimbabwe is hosting major tournaments. Nationals, Minerva Zimbabwe Open, CABS Candidates all happening here.
That matters because not everyone can afford to travel outside the country. So having strong events at home means more players get rated, more players get exposure, and more dreams stay alive. Chess haisi ye vanhu vashoma chete it’s becoming accessible.

Representing Zimbabwe Beyond the Board

International events are also there  Africa Youth, Africa Juniors, Olympiad, World Youth Championships. For any young player, this is the dream. Wearing Zimbabwe colours, playing against strong opponents from other countries  that’s next level.
But zvinoita only if we prepare. Chess at that level is not luck. It’s discipline, studying, practice, and sacrifice. If we want medals and titles, we must work harder.

Chess for Everyone

One thing that touched me is seeing events like prison chess and chess for people with disabilities. That shows chess is more than ratings and trophies. It’s about thinking, growth, and second chances. Chess can change lives, chaizvo.

My Hope for 2026

Personally, I hope 2026 is not just about having events on paper. I hope players show up. I hope clubs become active. I hope sponsors see the potential. And I hope young players take this seriously.
Zimbabwe has talent. That’s not a question. The question is whether we will put in the work.
As ZimChess, I want this platform to tell our stories the wins, the losses, the lessons. Not just the big names, but the young hustlers grinding every day, hoping chess opens doors.
