ZimChess Online Blitz #2: The Series Continues on 15 August
The clocks are ready again.
Just days after launching its first official online tournament, ZimChess is returning to the Lichess board for the second edition of its online blitz series.
ZimChess Online Blitz #2 will take place on 15 August 2026, bringing players together once again for 90 minutes of fast-paced, rated 3+0 Blitz Arena competition.
For ZimChess, however, this is about more than another online tournament. It is the next chapter in an attempt to create a regular competitive space where Zimbabwean chess players can meet, play and test themselves.
From an idea to a series
The story began with ZimChess Online Blitz #1, announced earlier this month as the first official online tournament in the ZimChess series.
The inaugural event was designed around a simple idea: get Zimbabwean chess players onto the same virtual board.
The format was deliberately accessible a 3+0 rated Arena, running for 90 minutes on Lichess, with players of different backgrounds and playing levels invited to participate.
As ZimChess explained in its original announcement, online chess provides something particularly valuable to a geographically spread chess community: players from different cities, clubs, schools and communities can compete without needing to be in the same physical venue. (chessblog.co.zw)
The first edition also established the philosophy behind the series. Rather than focusing immediately on large prizes, the priority was to create a sustainable tournament platform and give players more opportunities to compete. The top three finishers were also set to receive digital recognition from ZimChess. (chessblog.co.zw)
Now, the experiment becomes a series.
The second edition arrives
On Saturday, 15 August 2026, the ZimChess Online Blitz series returns for its second edition.
The tournament will once again use the fast 3+0 time control, meaning players have three minutes for the entire game with no increment.
That format leaves little room for hesitation.
Opening preparation, tactical awareness, time management and the ability to make good decisions under pressure will all matter as players attempt to accumulate points across the 90-minute Arena.

More than just a blitz tournament
The significance of the second edition lies in its timing.
A tournament series becomes meaningful when players know there will be another event after the last one. By moving from #1 to #2, ZimChess is beginning to turn the idea of regular online competition into a recurring part of its chess programme.
The original announcement outlined ambitions for the series to eventually expand into regular online blitz tournaments, rapid events, larger championship competitions and, with future sponsorship, events featuring cash prizes, trophies and other opportunities for players and clubs. Those ambitions will take time.
For now, the immediate objective is much simpler: build participation, establish consistency and give Zimbabwean players another reason to sit down and play.
The road ahead
There is also a sense of continuity between the two editions.
The first tournament was the starting point an attempt to see whether an online ZimChess tournament could bring the community together.
The second is the follow-up.
And if the series continues to grow, future editions could become bigger, more competitive and increasingly important fixtures on the Zimbabwean chess calendar.
That is how chess traditions are built: not necessarily through one spectacular event, but through the decision to keep showing up.
Get ready for August 15
For players planning to participate, the assignment is straightforward.
Charge the laptop and phone. Check the internet connection. Prepare the openings. Warm up the tactics. And, perhaps most importantly, be ready for the clock.
ZimChess Online Blitz #2 takes place on 15 August 2026 on Lichess.
The first edition opened the door.
The second edition is about keeping it open.
Play hard. Play fair. Enjoy the game.
