Zimbabwe Chess Community Gears Up for Three October Tournaments
Zimbabwe’s chess calendar is set for an exciting end to October, with the Vumba Chess Classic, the Strategic Minds Open legacy in Masvingo, and the Bulawayo Chess Open bringing together players from different parts of the country. The tournaments offer opportunities for competition, recognition and the continued growth of chess across Zimbabwe.
With events scheduled in Manicaland, Masvingo and Bulawayo, players will have opportunities to compete for prizes, test their skills and make their mark on the national chess scene.
Vumba Chess Classic Returns for Second Edition
The Harare Chess Society is preparing to host the second edition of the Vumba Chess Classic on Saturday, 31 October 2026, at Forest Hills Resort in Vumba, Manicaland.
The tournament follows the inaugural edition held in 2025, which attracted corporate chess players and produced a memorable contest for the title.
Brian Muringisi of Old Mutual emerged as the inaugural champion, scoring an impressive 6½ points out of a possible seven. His performance earned him the championship and a refrigerator as the first edition's top prize.
Rickie Malaba of the Centre for Disease Control finished as first runner-up, while Samuel Mavingire of CBZ claimed third place. Grace Chibaro of Nyaradzo was recognised as the best female player.
The return of the tournament provides another opportunity for corporate players to compete in a setting that combines chess with networking and recreation.
The 2026 edition is scheduled for 31 October at Forest Hills Resort, with registration and enquiries available through the Harare Chess Society on 0772870066 or via email at info@hararechess.org.
With the previous edition producing a competitive seven-round contest, attention now turns to who will rise to the occasion and claim the title in 2026.
Masvingo Chess Continues to Attract Competitive Fields
Masvingo has also been an important stop on Zimbabwe's chess calendar, with the Strategic Minds Open Tournament demonstrating the strength of competition in the province.
Held at Chevron Hotel on 27 June 2026, the tournament attracted 83 players who contested seven rounds under the Swiss System.
Tawanda Moyo emerged as champion after finishing with an outstanding 6½/7, establishing himself at the top of a competitive field.
William Maulani finished second with six points, while International Master Kudzanai Mamombe claimed third place on the same score, with tiebreaks separating the leading contenders. Norest Bhebhe also finished on six points, narrowly missing out on a podium position.
The event demonstrated the competitive depth of the field, with several players remaining in contention for the top positions deep into the tournament.
The Clash of the Hawks Brings Another Open Tournament
Masvingo is set for another chess contest on 31 October 2026, with the Clash of the Hawks Open Chess Tournament scheduled to take place at Regency Chevron Hotel.
Organised under the Zimbabwe Chess Federation's Masvingo Province banner, the tournament carries the theme “Battle of Strategy. Rise Above the Board.”
The event will use the Swiss System, with a starting time of 8:30 AM and a time control of 30 minutes per player with no increment.
The tournament offers more than US$200 in listed prizes, including US$100 for the champion, US$60 for second place and US$40 for third place.
Special prizes include awards for the best female player, the best over-50 male player and the best over-40 female player. There are also prizes for the best secondary school player and best primary school player.
Registration is US$5 per player. Players seeking further information can contact Mr Ndanga on 0779328942 or Mr Moyana on 0773901000.
With a competitive prize structure and categories recognising different groups of players, the event adds another opportunity for chess players to compete in Masvingo.
Bulawayo Chess Open Offers a Two-Day Competitive Challenge
The Bulawayo Chess Association (BCA) will host the Bulawayo Chess Open Tournament from 31 October to 1 November 2026 at Agape College in Bulawayo.
The tournament will feature Open, Ladies and Development sections, catering to players competing at different stages of their chess development.
The Open and Ladies sections will each be contested over seven rounds using the Swiss System, with a time control of 60 minutes per player. The Development section will take place on 31 October only, featuring six rounds at 15 minutes per player.
Prize Money and Opportunities for Young Players
The Open section offers US$160 to the champion, US$120 for second place, US$80 for third place and US$50 for fourth place.
In the Ladies section, the champion will receive US$80, followed by US$60 for second place and US$40 for third place.
The Development section will award trophies, chess equipment, medals and stationery across its Under-14, Under-12, Under-10 and Under-8 categories.
One of the tournament's major attractions is the opportunity available to young players. The best Under-20 player will receive sponsorship to the Bulawayo 2026 December Candidates Tournament, covering transport, registration and lunch.
This initiative provides a valuable opportunity for a promising young player to participate in another important tournament on the local chess calendar.
