What’s Happening?
The Midlands Chess Championship 2026 Open is coming up in Gweru, and it’s shaping up to be a solid classical event for both experienced players and upcoming talent.
This tournament is NOT FIDE-rated, and that’s actually a good thing for many players (especially beginners and juniors). It means less pressure, more learning, and more freedom to just play chess.
Tournament Format (Simple Breakdown)
The event will be played over 7 classical rounds across two days:
- Dates: 7–8 March 2026
- Time Control: 60 minutes + 0 increment
- Rounds: 7 (Swiss system)
You’ll need to be seated by 07:30 for welcoming remarks, so please don’t be that person running in late
Sections Available
Open Section
- Open to all players
- Perfect for club players, strong juniors, and anyone confident in their game
Development Section (Under 16)
- For young players still learning and growing
- Great exposure and experience without FIDE pressure
Honestly, iyi section yevana is important. This is how future IMs and GMs are built
Prizes (Yes, Real Money )
Open Section
- 1st: $250
- 2nd: $200
- 3rd: $150
- 4th: $100
- 5th: $50
Best Lady
- 1st: $100
- 2nd: $50
Development Section
- 1st: $30
- 2nd: $20
- 3rd: Chess Set
Not bad at all especially for a non-FIDE event.
Important Rules to Note
- No phones, smartwatches, or earpods
- Default time: 15 minutes
- Dress code: Smart casual (or school uniform for scholars)
- Alcohol is strictly prohibited
Basically: come correct, play fair, and respect the game.
