ZCF 2026 Nationals List Out — Big Names, Stories & What It Means for Zim Chess

Chess fam, the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) has released the official lineup for the 2026 Zimbabwe National Chess Championships  and this year has stories worth following. There are defending champions, strong in‑form players, and young talent ready to make a name for themselves.

Defending Champion — Tapiwa Jele

First up: Tapiwa Jele is back to defend his title. Jele won the 2025 CBZ National Open Chess Championship with 7 points out of 9, taking the title on tiebreak ahead of Vitalis Mapuranga and others. He also became the first player from Bulawayo to win the National Open, a historic achievement for his city.
Jele’s consistency and preparation paid off last year, and now he enters 2026 with everyone watching  defending a title is always harder than winning it the first time.

Form Player — Farai Hamandishe

Then there’s Farai Hamandishe, who has been showing good form in a recent local event. While specific online rankings vary, his competitive performances in Zim opens and league play show he’s not just participating he’s contending. A player in form like this isn’t easy to beat, because confidence and momentum matter in long events.
Farai represents that dangerous blend of skill and rhythm that can turn heads in a tight championship.

Young Talent — Prosper Matyire

Now the future looks bright. Prosper Matyire may be early in his chess career, but getting into Nationals at a young age is a big deal. Young players often play with fearlessness and creativity, and that’s the kind of energy that can produce surprises against more experienced opponents.

Another young name you don’t want to overlook is Tanaka Katsande. He’s been a strong performer historically at the CABS Candidates Chess Tournament, winning the event in both 2023 ,2024and 2025 showing consistency and competitive mindset.
Most recent reports place Tanaka among the top players in national opens as well, with tournament results showing solid placement among the field.
That kind of repeated success tells you he doesn’t crack easily under pressure and that makes him a real contender.

Experience in the Field

It’s not only about youth and form. The Open section has seasoned competitors like:
IM Rodwell Makoto — a veteran and International Master known for international representation and experience.
FM Roy Mwadzura — regularly among the top finishers in national events.
Vitalis Mapuranga — closely challenged for the title last time.

These players bring tournament discipline and deep strategic thinking  the kind of experience that makes long championships so fascinating.

Ladies Section Continues to Grow

On the women’s side, strong competitors like WFM Linda Shaba, WCM Kudzanyi Charinda, and WCM Refiloe Mudodo have been consistent performers in national circles. Their presence highlights continued depth in Zimbabwean women’s chess, something the federation has been intentionally developing.
