Zimbabwe's Young Stars Take on Africa
Zimbabwe's brightest young chess talents are ready to take on the continent as the FIDE ISCF World Schools Team Championship 2026 – African Continental Stage gets underway in Cape Town, South Africa.
The event marks a historic moment, as Africa hosts the continental qualifying stage for the first time. School teams from across the continent will battle for a coveted place at the FIDE ISCF World Schools Team Championship Grand Final, set to take place later this year.
For Zimbabwe, it's another proud opportunity to showcase the country's growing strength in scholastic chess.
Team Zimbabwe
Representing Zimbabwe are:

♟️ Sengwa Primary School
Both schools earned their places after outstanding performances in the Crystal Candy National Schools Team Chess Championship, proving themselves among the country's best school chess teams.
Their qualification is a reflection of the tremendous work being done by players, coaches, teachers, parents, and the Zimbabwe Chess Federation to develop chess at grassroots level.
A Continental Challenge
The championship has attracted 29 school teams from across Africa, including representatives from:

- 🇺🇬 Uganda
- 🇳🇬 Nigeria
- 🇰🇪 Kenya
- 🇹🇳 Tunisia
- 🇬🇭 Ghana
- 🇳🇦 Namibia
- 🇧🇼 Botswana
- 🇿🇲 Zambia
- 🇹🇿 Tanzania
- and several other African nations.
The tournament will be played over eight Swiss rounds, with only one team earning qualification to the World Schools Team Championship Grand Final.
Tournament Seedings
According to the official starting rankings:
- Budiriro 4 Primary School begins the tournament as the 10th seed, with an average team rating of 1449.
- Sengwa Primary School starts as the 29th seed.
Although several teams enter the championship as favourites, team chess is known for producing surprises. Every round presents a new opportunity, and Zimbabwe's representatives will be aiming to outperform expectations.
Four Days of Intense Competition
Competition begins on 7 July, with teams playing two rounds each day over four days.
Every match is crucial as schools compete for continental honours and the chance to represent Africa at the World Schools Team Championship Grand Final later this year.

The championship is part of FIDE's Year of Chess in Education 2026, an initiative promoting chess as a powerful educational tool worldwide.
