Elite Chess U14 Super Open Set to Showcase Zimbabwe’s Young Chess Talent

Elite Chess U14 Super Open Set to Showcase Zimbabwe’s Young Chess Talent

Zimbabwe’s young chess players will have an opportunity to compete for cash prizes, medals, trophies and valuable rating points when the Elite Chess U14 Super Open takes place in Harare on 15–16 August 2026.

Organised by Elite Chess Club, the two-day classical tournament will bring together players aged 14 years and below for six rounds of competitive chess at the TelOne Center for Learning.

With a US$440 listed cash prize pool, additional prizes for standout players and games counting towards the Elite National Chess Rating (ENCR) System, the tournament promises to be an important event on the junior chess calendar.

Six Rounds of Classical Chess

The Elite Chess U14 Super Open will be played under a six-round Swiss system, with games using a time control of 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment.

The longer time control will give young players an opportunity to demonstrate their calculation, positional understanding, strategic planning and endgame skills in a serious over-the-board environment.

For developing players, the tournament also provides valuable experience in managing a tournament across multiple rounds, handling pressure and competing against opponents of different playing strengths.

US$440 in Cash Prizes

The top five finishers will share a listed cash prize pool of US$440.

The tournament winner will receive US$150, together with a trophy and gold medal.

The full prize structure is:

PositionPrize
1st PlaceUS$150 + Trophy + Gold Medal
2nd PlaceUS$120 + Silver Medal
3rd PlaceUS$80 + Bronze Medal

There will also be assorted gifts for the Best Girl, Best U12 Player and Best U10 Player.

These additional awards provide younger players and female competitors with further opportunities to be recognised for their performances during the tournament.

ENCR Rating Points at Stake

A major feature of the tournament is that it will count towards the Elite National Chess Rating (ENCR) System.

The official Elite Chess Rating platform provides a local system for recording player ratings, tournament results and rankings.

The ENCR system is administered by Elite Chess Club and is licensed by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation. The partnership between the two organisations forms part of efforts to strengthen tournament administration and create a structured national rating framework for Zimbabwean players.

The system is designed to give players a clearer way of tracking their competitive progress while providing clubs, schools, academies and tournament organisers with a local rating infrastructure.

The collaboration between the Zimbabwe Chess Federation and Elite Chess Club was formalised through a licensing and collaboration agreement signed in Harare in May 2026.

The U14 Super Open therefore represents more than an opportunity to win a tournament trophy. Players will also be competing for results that contribute to their record within Zimbabwe's developing national rating system.

Players and chess enthusiasts can access the official rating platform through the Elite Chess Rating System.

Elite Chess Club Organising the Event

The tournament is being organised by Elite Chess Club, which has played an active role in developing competitive chess opportunities and the ENCR rating infrastructure.

Through the club's work on the rating system and junior competitions, the organisers are seeking to create more opportunities for Zimbabwean players to compete regularly and measure their progress.

The U14 Super Open fits into that broader objective by combining junior development with structured competitive chess.

Harare Oncology Pharmacy Supporting Junior Chess

The tournament is supported by Harare Oncology Pharmacy, whose involvement provides additional backing for the development of young chess players.

Harare Oncology Pharmacy is based in Harare and is listed among registered pharmacy facilities by the Health Professions Authority of Zimbabwe.

The pharmacy has also supported wider community initiatives, including the Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk, demonstrating its involvement in community-focused activities.

Its support of the Elite Chess U14 Super Open highlights the role that businesses and community partners can play in creating opportunities for young Zimbabweans to participate in sport and develop their talents.

For the organisers, such partnerships are important in helping create competitive platforms where young players can gain experience and aspire to higher levels of achievement.

A Chance to Measure Their Mastery

For Zimbabwe's young chess players, the Elite Chess U14 Super Open offers more than a chance to take home prize money.

It is an opportunity to gain serious classical tournament experience, test their preparation against other ambitious young players, earn recognition and build their competitive record through the ENCR system.

With six rounds of chess ahead, the battle for first place is likely to test not only raw playing strength but also consistency, concentration and the ability to perform under pressure.

The question now is simple:

Who will emerge as the Elite Chess U14 Super Open champion?

The boards will be set in Harare on 15 August, and Zimbabwe's next generation of chess talent will have the opportunity to Measure Their Mastery.
